History of TRAFFED

Founded in 2003, TRAFFED-RDC (which stands for Travail en Réseau avec les Fédérations des Femmes et Enfants en Détresse) is a Congolese national environmental civil society organization. Based in Bukavu, it operates in South Kivu province, working in several areas to protect the rights of women, children, local communities, indigenous Pygmy peoples, and at-risk elderly people affected by environmental degradation and climate change.

TRAFFED works in several areas: promoting equal opportunities for men and women in the sustainable management of natural resources; providing environmental education based on a holistic ecological and pastoral approach; reducing poverty and social injustice; addressing climate change and promoting climate justice; providing support in humanitarian emergencies; and creating environmentally friendly jobs that involve women, youth, children, and marginalized and vulnerable communities.

TRAFFED's work to protect the rich forests of the Itombwe Massif has taken many forms, such as creating the Higher Institute of Ecology for Nature Conservation (ISEC Katana). This institute includes a department for environmental theology and human ecology. TRAFFED also conducts biodiversity surveys, mapping, data collection, and community awareness campaigns in existing and planned protected areas (for example, the Itombwe Nature Reserve, Ngandja Wildlife Reserve, Luama-Kivu Hunting Domain, and Lumbwe-Lulenge Community Reserve). Additionally, it helps indigenous communities acquire land titles for more than 150,000 hectares of customary forests.

TRAFFED regularly advocates for biodiversity conservation and "Creation Care" at the national level, in partnership with the Church of Christ in Congo, which has 25 million members.
